Putty is what you use when a pad cannot cope with the shape of the gap. It is pressed into place by hand, takes up whatever distance each component needs, and thins out under clamping pressure instead of resisting it. This 30 g jar of GN-Ultimate is rated 6 W/mK and works from -30 C to 200 C.

  1. When a pad is the wrong tool

    A pad has one thickness across its whole area. That is fine over a row of matched components and useless where a tall inductor sits beside a flat controller under a single plate. Putty has no thickness of its own until it is squeezed, so it fills 0.4 mm in one place and 2 mm an inch away without any cutting.

  2. Low pressure, thin final layer

    The soft formulation is the point. It deforms under the modest clamping force that shrouds and shields provide, and it keeps thinning as the assembly closes, which leaves a much shallower final layer than a pad of the same nominal gap would. Less material between the parts means a shorter path for the heat.

  3. Applying it without making a mess

    Work with clean dry hands, roll a small amount into a rough sausage, and lay it along the components rather than dabbing it on top of each one. Use less than looks right: the closing plate will spread it, and putty pushed out around the edges is material that is not doing any work.

  4. It stays soft and does not weep oil

    The formula is non-hardening and does not release oil over time, which is the failure people remember from cheaper putties: a board that comes apart two years later with a shiny film across it. This one is meant to stay workable through the whole -30 C to 200 C range and to come off in one piece when it is time.
