How to measure the gap
The finder is only as good as the number you put into it, and the number is easy to get wrong. Here is the method that works without special tools.
- Assemble dry. Fit the heatsink or backplate with no pad and no paste, and do up the screws to the point where they just bite. Do not torque them down.
- Find the tallest and the shortest component under the plate. On a graphics card that is usually a memory package versus a VRM choke; on a motherboard, the choke versus the MOSFET.
- Measure both. A feeler gauge is ideal. Failing that, press a ball of modeling clay onto each component, close the plate, open it and measure the flattened disc with a caliper.
- Round each reading up to the next 0.5 mm step. A pad that is a touch too thick compresses; a pad that is a touch too thin does nothing.
- If the two readings differ by more than 0.5 mm, buy two thicknesses, or reach for putty, which does not have a fixed height at all.
One warning. Never stack two thin pads to make a thick one. Each interface between them is another thermal barrier, and the pair will perform worse than a single sheet of the right height.
