Check price and buyMost ranges skip 2.5 mm, and most benches end up wishing they had it. It is the thickness that solves the awkward case where a 2 mm pad rattles in the gap and a 3 mm pad bows the board when the screws come down. Cutting the difference in half rather than forcing an approximate fit is exactly what this 80 x 40 mm sheet of 12 W/mK GP-Extreme is for.
Interface material has to be compressed to work, but over-compression is a real failure mode: a pad that is too thick prevents the cooler from seating on the die, and on a graphics card that means the one component that matters most is now the one running hottest. When your measurement lands between the common sizes, a half step is not a luxury, it is the correct part.
A cooler that will not pull down evenly, screws that keep turning without gaining torque, a visible gap at one corner of the plate, or a die that comes out with a paste print that is thin at the edges and thick in the middle: all of them point to a pad holding the assembly apart. Back off, drop half a millimeter, and the print goes even.
Because 2.5 mm is rarely stocked, it is worth labeling the offcuts clearly and keeping them separate from the 2 and 3 mm scraps. A 2.5 mm piece looks almost identical to its neighbors once the liners are off, and confidently fitting the wrong one is a slower mistake to find than fitting an obviously wrong size.
Nothing about the formulation changes with thickness. This is the same non-curing, electrically non-conductive filler as the rest of the GP-Extreme line, rated at 12 W/mK and happy to sit against exposed passives. Only the height changes, which is the whole point of buying the size that matches the gap instead of the size that happens to be in the drawer.
