Thick gaps tend to be wide gaps, and wide gaps consume sheet area at a rate that catches people out. This twin pack of 80 x 40 mm GP-Extreme at 2.0 mm exists for exactly that: backplates covering a whole memory row, shields spanning a bank of power stages, and any job where one sheet was always going to be tight. Both carry the same 12 W/mK rating.
Wide gaps, wide pieces
A 2 mm gap under a backplate is rarely a small island. It usually runs the length of the board, and a strip that long needs to come off the sheet in one piece to sit evenly. Working from two sheets means you can take the long cuts you actually want instead of piecing a run together from offcuts.
Volume is what you are buying
Between the two sheets there is roughly twice the material of a single 2 mm order, and at this thickness volume is the whole point. Thicker pads do not just cover area, they occupy space, and the price per useful cubic result improves when you are not throwing away narrow edge strips because you had no room left to plan around them.
One thickness across the whole gap
With plenty of material to hand there is no temptation to stack two thinner pieces to reach 2 mm. Stacking adds an extra interface in the middle of the thermal path and the two pieces never compress evenly. A single 2 mm piece from a full sheet does the job properly.
Marking thickness on the offcut
Once the liners come off, a 2 mm strip and a 1.5 mm strip look almost identical in a drawer. Write the thickness on the liner before you cut, keep the offcuts in separate bags, and the next job starts with certainty rather than a caliper hunt.
