Two and a half millimeters is the step people reach for when 2 mm leaves the plate hovering and 3 mm will not let the screws close. It is a narrow window, and the sheets that fill it get used in quantity, which is why this GP-Extreme pack supplies two 80 x 40 mm pieces of 12 W/mK material rather than one.

  1. The step between two and three millimeters

Plenty of pad ranges jump straight from 2 to 3 mm and leave the builder to pick which error to make. A half-millimeter step in between means a gap measured at 2.4 or 2.6 mm has a thickness that reaches it without holding the plate open, which is the difference between real contact and a fitting that only looks right.

  2. Why a square sheet suits console hardware

Game consoles arrange their memory and power components in clusters rather than in neat rows, and a cluster comes out of a square sheet with far less waste than out of a long ribbon. An 80 x 40 mm piece covers a bank of chips and still leaves usable rectangles along two edges for the smaller islands beside it.

  3. Two sheets and the second attempt

Deep material is unforgiving of a bad cut: a torn edge at 2.5 mm is a void rather than a cosmetic flaw, and it sits directly over the component that needed the contact. Having the spare sheet in the packet turns a ruined piece into a five-minute setback instead of a wait, which matters when the machine is already apart.

  4. What twelve watts of conductivity covers

GP-Extreme is the standard compound of the range: non-curing, electrically non-conductive, non-corrosive and soft enough to conform under light clamping pressure. At 12 W/mK it is well ahead of the hard factory filler it usually replaces, and at this depth the quality of the material counts for as much as the fit.
