By the time a gap reaches 1.5 mm the manufacturer has usually built in real clearance, and that is where a large slice of graphics-card repair work happens. Memory packages sitting below the level of the die, backplate standoffs, power stages under a secondary heatsink: all of them tend to land in this band. An 80 x 40 mm sheet of 12 W/mK GP-Extreme covers a card without leaving you short.

  1. Why 1.5 mm shows up on so many graphics cards

    A cooler plate has to clear the die, the memory packages and the power stages at once, and those three sit at different heights. Designers solve it by machining steps into the plate and letting the interface material take up the rest. On a great many cards the memory step lands between one and two millimeters, which is exactly why this thickness moves faster than any other in the range.

  2. Measure before you trust a forum post

    Board revisions change gaps without changing model names, so a thickness that worked on someone else’s card is a starting point, not a specification. A cheap set of feeler gauges or a depth caliper against the cooler plate takes two minutes and removes the guesswork. If you land between two sizes, the thicker pad is the safer error as long as the cooler still bolts down without bowing the board.

  3. Cutting cleanly at this thickness

    At 1.5 mm the sheet has enough body to cut against a steel rule without deforming, which makes it the easiest thickness in the range to work with. Score once firmly rather than sawing, keep the blade vertical, and the edge will come out square. Square edges matter because a beveled edge leaves a wedge of air along the side of every chip it touches.

  4. Keeping the sheet flat in storage

    Store the unused portion flat between its liners, not rolled and not folded. This compound takes a set from whatever shape it is left in, and a crease that develops over a month on a shelf will still be there when you cut a piece from it. A drawer and a piece of card underneath is all the storage this material asks for.
