GP-Ultimate is the step above the workhorse pad, rated at 15 W/mK rather than 12, and 0.5 mm is where that difference matters most. In a thin gap the pad is a small part of the total thermal path, so a better filler shows up as a real number rather than a rounding error. The 90 x 50 mm sheet gives 4,500 square millimeters of it.

  1. What the step up to 15 W/mK buys

    Conductivity is only one term in the equation, but it is the term you can choose. In a 0.5 mm gap the resistance contributed by the filler is already small, so improving it moves the needle less than fitting the right thickness would. Where it earns its place is on hardware that is already close to its limit and has nothing else left to fix.

  2. A slightly larger sheet than the standard

    At 90 by 50 millimeters this sheet is a little over 40 per cent larger in area than the common 80 by 40 format. On a card with a long memory row that extra 10 mm of length is often the difference between one continuous strip and two pieces with a joint in the middle.

  3. Thin pads want clean surfaces

    At half a millimeter there is no material to spare for absorbing debris. Old pad residue, a fingerprint or a fleck of dried paste under the pad becomes a bump that lifts the whole piece off the chip. Clean both faces with isopropyl and a lint-free cloth before the new pad goes anywhere near them.

  4. Where a paste would be the better tool

    If the surfaces are flat, machined and clamped hard against each other, as they are on a processor and its cooler, a paste beats any pad because it can be spread thinner than 0.5 mm. Pads exist for the places a paste cannot bridge. Choosing between them is a question about the gap, not about the numbers on the packet.
