One millimeter is the most-used gap and GP-Ultimate is the higher-conductivity filler in the range at 15 W/mK, so this combination gets specified often for cards and boards that have been overclocked or are living in a small case. The 90 x 50 mm sheet is generous enough to cover a memory row and the power stages around it in one go.

  1. When the easy gains are already taken

Reseating a cooler, cleaning a fan and replacing paste are the changes that produce the biggest drops in temperature. Once those are done, the interface material over memory and power stages is one of the few remaining variables. That is the moment a 15 W/mK filler is worth its premium over a 12 W/mK one.

  2. A millimeter of compliance under a clip

Many power-stage heatsinks are held by spring clips or push pins rather than screws, which means the clamping force is fixed and modest. At 1 mm this compound deforms readily enough to close under that force and thick enough to accommodate the height scatter between components.

  3. Laying out a 90 x 50 sheet

The proportions suit a card well: a 90 mm run along one edge covers most memory rows, and the remaining 90 by 38 rectangle is a useful block for islands and small squares. Take the long strip first and the sheet stays tidy.

  4. The same handling rules as any filler

Peel one liner, position, then peel the second. Do not stretch the material to make a piece reach. Do not stack layers. Do not reuse a pad that has already been compressed. None of these change with conductivity, and all of them cost more performance than the difference between one grade of pad and another.
