Deep gaps and wide plates are the combination that empties a sheet fastest. These two 90 x 50 mm pieces of 2.0 mm GP-Ultimate give 15 W/mK across enough area to cover a full backplate and still have material for the front of the board, which is usually where a single sheet would have run out.
Enough volume for a full plate
A backplate contacts a board in broad rectangles rather than thin lines, and at 2 mm each of those rectangles is a substantial piece of compound. Two sheets removes the arithmetic from the job: cut the pieces the plate actually needs rather than the pieces the remaining sheet allows.
Conductivity matters more as the gap deepens
The thicker the pad, the larger the share of total resistance it owns, and the more a 15 W/mK compound separates itself from a lower grade. Backplate gaps at 2 mm are squarely in that territory, which is why the better material is worth specifying here rather than on the thin pieces.
Closing a plate evenly
Start every fastener by hand before tightening any of them, then work around the plate in stages. Thick filler pushes back, and a plate that is pulled down at one corner first will end up with one end of every pad crushed and the other end floating.
Storing the spare flat and clean
Two millimeter material holds an impression from anything left resting on it, so store the unopened sheet flat with nothing on top. Kept that way and with the liners on, it stays exactly as supplied until the next plate comes off.
