Two millimeters is a gap built on purpose, usually by a designer who needed a plate to clear tall components while still cooling something shorter. At that depth the filler contributes a real share of the total resistance, which is the strongest argument in the range for choosing the 15 W/mK grade. The sheet measures 90 x 50 mm.

  1. Depth is where conductivity earns its keep

    Thermal resistance through a pad rises with thickness and falls with conductivity. At 0.5 mm the two grades are close. At 2 mm the gap between them widens, because there is four times as much material in the path for the better number to act on. If you are going to pay for a higher grade anywhere, pay for it here.

  2. Backplates and the flex problem

    A backplate is thin metal held at a few points, so it bends between fasteners. A soft 2 mm filler follows that bend and keeps contact across the whole span, while a rigid spacer would touch only where the plate happens to be flat. Compliance is a specification even when nobody prints it.

  3. Cutting wide pieces from a 90 x 50 sheet

    Backplate pads are usually rectangles rather than ribbons. Plan the largest rectangle first and take it from a corner, leaving an L-shaped remainder that is still large enough to be useful. Cutting from the middle of a sheet is the fastest way to turn one useful piece into two awkward ones.

  4. Do not chase the gap with two pads

    Reaching 2 mm with a 1 mm pad doubled over adds an interface in the middle of the path and two faces that will never mate perfectly. It measures worse than a single correct piece every time. Buy the height you need rather than assembling it.
