Two millimeters is where a gap stops being a tolerance and starts being a design decision. Backplates that cool memory through the PCB, secondary heatsinks over power delivery, and shields that stand off the board on purpose all need a filler with real depth. This 80 x 40 mm sheet of GP-Extreme carries 12 W/mK across that distance while staying soft enough to seat under modest clamping force.

  1. Gaps that are wide on purpose

    When a backplate cools memory through the reverse side of the board, the designer has to leave room for solder joints, silkscreen and the board’s own flex. Two millimeters of soft filler bridges that distance without loading the PCB. The same applies to shields over power stages, where the gap is set by the tallest inductor rather than by the chip you actually want to cool.

  2. Thicker pad, longer thermal path

    It is worth being honest about the physics: every extra millimeter of filler adds resistance, no matter how good the compound is. A 2 mm pad is the right choice only when the gap genuinely is 2 mm. Stacking two thinner pieces to reach the same height is worse still, because you add a second interface in the middle of the path. One correctly sized piece always beats a sandwich.

  3. Seating a thick pad without trapping air

    Place the piece on the cooler rather than the board where you can, press it down along its length with a fingertip so it wets the metal, then bring the two halves together square. Dropping a heatsink onto a thick pad at an angle rolls the leading edge and leaves a void behind it. If the pad slides out of position while you tighten, the piece was cut too small for its island.

  4. Coverage from a single 80 x 40 sheet

    Thick pads eat area quickly because thick gaps tend to be large ones. Plan the cuts on paper before the blade comes out and the sheet will cover a backplate job with margin. Anything left over is worth keeping labeled by thickness, since 2 mm offcuts are easy to confuse with 1.5 mm by eye once the liners come off.
