Half-millimeter strips get used up quickly, because every drive, every memory bank and every heatpipe run wants its own piece. This pack supplies two 120 x 20 mm strips of GP-Ultimate at 15 W/mK so that a board with three drive slots does not turn into two orders. It is the highest-rated group of pads on this site by review count.

  1. Boards with more than one drive slot

Three M.2 slots means three shields and three separate pieces of interface material, and no two of them are quite the same length. Two strips cover that comfortably with material left over for the drive that gets added later, which on a board with spare slots is usually a question of when rather than whether.

  2. Thin material and the value of a second piece

A torn thin strip fitted anyway is a void under a chip, and voids are invisible until the temperature readings arrive. Having a spare in the packet changes the decision from fitting a damaged piece to cutting a new one, which costs a minute and nothing else.

  3. What the review numbers actually cover

The rating shown here is shared across every thickness of this pad in the two-piece format, because they are sold as one listing with a size selector. Read it as an opinion on the material and the packaging rather than on half a millimeter specifically. The compound is identical across the thicknesses in any case.

  4. Keeping the second strip usable

Leave the spare sealed and flat. A ribbon that has been curled in a bag will not lie down straight again, and at this thickness a strip that wants to lift at one end will do exactly that under a shield, taking a whole row of chips out of contact.
