GP-Ultimate is the higher-conductivity line, rated 15 W/mK against the 12 of the standard compound, and at half a millimeter that difference is worth the most. A thin pad is already close to the best a solid interface can do, so the remaining gains come from the material itself rather than from the geometry. This strip is 120 x 20 mm of it.

  1. Why thin pads benefit most from a better compound

    Thermal resistance through a pad is roughly its thickness divided by its conductivity. At 3 mm the thickness dominates and the compound is a secondary factor. At 0.5 mm there is barely any thickness left to blame, so moving from 12 to 15 W/mK changes a larger share of what remains. If you are going to pay for the better material anywhere, pay for it here.

  2. The strip shape and where it goes

    An M.2 drive is roughly 80 by 22 mm, a memory row is a long rectangle, and a laptop heatpipe is a line. All of them come out of a 120 x 20 mm ribbon with one straight cut and no waste worth mentioning. Cutting the same pieces from a square sheet leaves a perforated remnant nobody wants to store.

  3. Under a motherboard drive shield

    Board makers set M.2 shields close to the flash packages, and many ship with a pad in this range already fitted. Half a millimeter usually replaces it directly. Measure with the shield resting on the drive before you commit, because a pad that is too thick will hold the screw off its thread and lift the plate off the controller.

  4. Handling the thinnest option in the line

    At 0.5 mm the material is soft enough to stretch if you pull the liner at an angle. Peel one liner, place the strip, press it flat with a fingertip along its length, then take the second liner off downward rather than upward. A stretched pad has thin spots, and thin spots are where the contact fails.
