Two millimeters is the gap left by a cooler that spans a whole card rather than sitting on one chip, and it runs the length of everything the shroud passes over. This 120 x 20 mm strip of GP-Ultimate is that depth at 15 W/mK, which is the highest conductivity in the pad range and the part of the specification you can still choose once the gap is measured.

  1. Two millimeters under a full-length cooler

A shroud is built around the tallest component beneath it, so the parts that are shorter inherit a wider gap than they would under a dedicated heatsink. Over memory packages and secondary controllers that distance commonly lands near 2 mm, which is deep enough for the compound grade to show in the result.

  2. Paying for conductivity at the right depth

On a half-millimeter piece the difference between compounds is small in absolute terms because there is so little material in the path. At 2 mm there is four times as much of it, so the same percentage improvement in the compound returns four times the degrees. This is the depth at which the better grade stops being a rounding error.

  3. A ribbon for a line of parts

Everything that sits under a shroud sits in a row, because that is how boards are laid out. Starting from a 20 mm ribbon rather than a sheet means one crosscut per run, no long freehand cuts, and an offcut that is still a usable strip rather than an awkward frame of scrap.

  4. One strip for one measured job

Buying singles makes sense when the measurement is already in hand and applies to one run. Stocking a pack of a depth you happened to need once is how a drawer fills with thicknesses that never match the next card to come apart.
