Check price and buyThree millimeters is a lot of distance for heat to travel, which is why the gaps that need it benefit most from a compound that moves heat well. This 120 x 20 mm strip of 3.0 mm GP-Ultimate is rated 15 W/mK and is meant for chassis spreaders, shrouds and shields that sit well clear of the components they are cooling.
A thick pad is a long path, and every millimeter of it resists the heat crossing. That is an argument for choosing the thinnest pad the gap allows, and where the gap genuinely is three millimeters, it is also an argument for spending on the better material rather than accepting a longer path in a poorer compound.
Small-form-factor builds and consoles often use a metal panel as part of the cooling, and the distance from the board to that panel is both large and uneven. A soft 3 mm strip closes it along a whole edge in one piece and absorbs the variation without pushing the board out of plane.
Three millimeters of filler resists compression noticeably. Assemble the panel with the strip in place but the fasteners loose, and check that each one reaches its thread without force. If the panel springs open when you let go, the gap is smaller than the pad and a thinner piece is the answer.
Take the longest piece first, from one end, and work down in decreasing lengths. Starting with the short pieces because they are easy is the standard way to discover that the long run no longer fits anywhere on what is left.
