It is the gap under a great many VRM heatsinks, the standard spacing between a graphics-card cooler and its memory packages once a manufacturer has allowed a little tolerance, and the safe first guess when a service manual is silent. This 80 x 40 mm sheet delivers 12 W/mK across that gap and compresses enough to swallow small differences in component height.
If you strip enough hardware you notice that 1 mm keeps coming back. Power-stage heatsinks, chipset plates on desktop boards, memory under an aftermarket cooler and the shield over a laptop charging circuit all tend to land near it. Keeping one sheet of this thickness on the bench means most jobs can start immediately instead of waiting on a measurement and an order.
A gap filler only conducts if it is squeezed. At 1 mm this compound has enough thickness to deform into surface roughness on both sides while still leaving the heatsink free to seat on its posts. Aim for a pad that is a touch thicker than the measured gap rather than a fraction thinner, because a pad that only kisses the die leaves an air layer and air is the worst insulator in the case.
Memory chips sit in neat rows, which makes the 80 x 40 mm format efficient. Cut one long strip the width of the package row rather than eight separate squares. Fewer pieces means fewer edges to lift and a more even clamp across the row, and it uses less of the sheet than individual pads with generous margins around each chip.
The material is electrically non-conductive, non-corrosive and does not harden with age, which matters when a pad sits a millimeter from exposed solder joints and passive components. A piece that has been compressed once has taken a permanent set and will not perform the same way again, so plan to replace what you remove and keep uncut offcuts for the next repair.
