Two 120 x 20 mm strips of 12 W/mK GP-Extreme give a graphics card its memory row, a motherboard its power stages, and still leave something in the drawer.
If a shop could only stock one pad, the arguments would converge on something close to this: the thickness that matches the most designs, in the shape that matches the most components, supplied two at a time. It will not fit every gap, but it will start most jobs on the same afternoon they arrive.
Before cutting, close the heatsink onto a scrap of this material and look at the impression it leaves. A piece that comes back with a clear compressed footprint across its whole face is the right thickness. One that shows contact only at the ends is too thin for the middle, which usually means the plate is bowed rather than the pad being wrong.
Where a heatsink covers eight components in a line, cover them with one strip rather than eight pieces. Continuous material clamps more evenly, has no gaps for air to sit in at the joints, and takes a fraction of the time to fit. That is the whole argument for the strip format in one sentence.
Leave it sealed. The compound is non-curing and does not deteriorate on a shelf, so an unopened strip is a genuine reserve rather than a slowly expiring one. The next time a card comes apart, the material for it is already in the drawer.
