Check price and buyOne millimeter in strip form is the workhorse of power-delivery cooling. It sits under the heatsinks that cover MOSFET and inductor rows on desktop boards and graphics cards, and those runs are long enough that a single strip is often exactly one job. Two 120 x 20 mm strips of 12 W/mK GP-Extreme mean two jobs, or one job with room to be careful.
Board makers keep the gap over power stages small because the heatsink is doing real work there. A millimeter is enough to take up the height difference between components and the tolerance in a clip-on heatsink, without stretching the thermal path. It is the thickness most VRM heatsinks were designed around.
A modern desktop board can have a VRM heatsink on two sides of the socket plus a chipset plate. Add an M.2 shield or two and a single strip is short. The pair covers a full board refresh, which is what most people are doing when they take a heatsink off in the first place.
Old pads on a used board are usually dried in appearance, compressed flat and often stuck hard to the heatsink. They are not worth saving. Scrape them off with a plastic spudger, clean both faces with isopropyl, and fit new material at the measured thickness. Reusing a set pad gives back none of the contact you just spent an hour recovering.
Store strips flat in a shallow box rather than curled in a bag. A 120 mm ribbon that has been coiled will not lie down flat again, and a strip that wants to lift at one end is a strip that will trap air along a whole row of components.
