Some gaps do not want a square sheet, they want a long narrow ribbon. An M.2 drive, a row of DRAM packages, the underside of a laptop heatpipe: all of them are far longer than they are wide, and cutting a strip like that out of a square sheet wastes most of the square. This 120 x 20 mm strip of 0.5 mm GP-Extreme is already the right shape at 12 W/mK.

  1. A format that matches the components

The 120 x 20 mm strip is not a smaller sheet, it is a different tool. Laid along an M.2 slot it covers the whole drive in one piece. Laid across a VRM row it reaches every power stage without a joint. When the target is a line rather than a patch, buying the line saves both material and the fiddly work of aligning several small squares.

  2. Half a millimeter under a drive shield

Motherboard M.2 shields sit close to the flash packages by design, and a pad that is too thick will lift the shield off its screw or bow the drive. At 0.5 mm this strip fits the tight side of that range, which is where most modern boards land. Check the shield thickness against the drive before choosing.

  3. Straight cuts along a straight strip

The strip only needs cross cuts, which is the easiest cut there is: one pass of a fresh blade against a rule, square to the edge. That means very little waste, and it means the two long edges of every piece are factory edges rather than something you produced freehand.

  4. Trimming to length rather than to shape

Measure the run, add nothing for luck, and cut. Interface material that overhangs the end of a chip does no work and can bridge onto a neighboring component. A piece cut to the island and no further compresses evenly and stays where you put it when the shield comes down.
