Two millimeters is the gap that turns up when a shroud clears the board rather than hugging it: graphics-card power sections under a full-length cover, memory beside a fan frame, chipset plates that bridge to a shield. This single 120 x 20 mm strip of 12 W/mK GP-Extreme is that depth in the format those runs want.

  1. The depth a shroud leaves behind

A cooler that spans a whole card is built around the tallest thing beneath it, so everything shorter ends up with a wider gap than a bare heatsink would leave. Two millimeters is the usual size of that space over power stages and secondary chips, and it is too deep for a thin ribbon to reach across.

  2. One strip, one run, one cut

Taking a 2 mm piece out of a square sheet means two long cuts and a remnant shaped like a picture frame. Starting from a ribbon that is already 20 mm wide reduces the job to a single crosscut at the length you measured, with both long edges still as they left the factory.

  3. Soft enough for an uneven line

Components in a row are never the same height, and a 2 mm pad has enough body to take up several tenths of variation along its length without lifting the plate at the tall end. That compliance is what lets one continuous piece serve an inductor and a flat controller side by side.

  4. Buying one strip rather than a pack

Single strips exist for the job that is already on the bench. If you measured 2 mm over one row and nothing else on the board needs the same depth, there is no reason to stock a second piece against a future that may call for a different thickness entirely.
