Check price and buyDeep gaps that run in a line are the hardest thing to cover from a square sheet, because every piece you need is long and every piece is thick. This 120 x 20 mm strip of 3.0 mm GP-Extreme starts in the right shape. It carries 12 W/mK and has enough depth to bridge the space between a board and a panel that was never meant to touch it.
In small-form-factor builds and laptops, the metal that finally sheds the heat is often the case itself. The distance from a hot component to that panel is measured in millimeters and it is rarely uniform. A soft 3 mm strip takes up the distance and the variation at the same time, without loading the board.
A short square of thick filler will roll or slide when a shield comes down at an angle. A long strip has enough contact area to grip the surface it is pressed onto and stay square. Where the target allows a single continuous run, use one, and place it on the metal side before assembly.
Three millimeters is enough to hold a panel open if the gap is smaller than you think. Close the assembly dry first with the strip in place and check that the fasteners still reach their threads without force. If the panel springs back when you release it, the gap needs a thinner piece.
The strip gives one 120 mm run or several shorter ones. Plan the longest piece first and take it from one end, then work the remainder down in decreasing lengths. Cutting the short pieces first is the reliable way to end up unable to make the long one.
