Backplate work is where a small sheet always feels short: the gaps are deep, the runs are long and the pieces are wide. This 120 x 120 mm square of 2.0 mm GP-Ultimate covers that at 15 W/mK, with enough material to do a full board face without piecing anything together from remnants.

  1. Wide pieces for a whole board face

    A backplate that cools memory through the PCB touches the board in several places at once, and those contacts are broad rectangles rather than narrow strips. Cutting them from a 120 mm square is straightforward. Cutting them from a small sheet means joins, and a join across a wide pad is exactly where the contact goes missing.

  2. Volume needs a plan before the first cut

    Two millimeters across a large area is a lot of compound and the sheet will not stretch. Sketch the layout, take the biggest rectangle first, keep the strips that come off the sides. The reliable way to run out is to cut the easy small pieces first and then look for room for the large one.

  3. Modest pressure, compliant material

    Backplates are held by small screws into standoffs rather than by a sprung bracket, so the available pressure is modest. This compound stays compliant at 2 mm and deforms under that kind of load instead of resisting it, which is what lets a thin plate close evenly rather than bowing between fasteners.

  4. Laid straight onto a populated board

    A pad this large will sit across traces, vias and solder joints. The material being electrically non-conductive and non-corrosive is the reason it can go directly onto the reverse of a board with nothing insulating in between, and the reason nobody has to think about where the pad edge lands.
