Backplate work is the case where a small sheet always feels short. The gaps are deep, the runs are long and the pieces are wide. This 120 x 120 mm square of 2.0 mm GP-Extreme gives 12 W/mK across the whole area with enough material to cover a full board without piecing anything together from remnants.

  1. Covering a whole board face

A backplate that cools memory through the PCB contacts the board in several places at once, and the pieces are usually wide rectangles rather than narrow strips. Cutting those from a 120 mm square is straightforward. Cutting them from a 40 mm sheet means joins, and joins in a wide pad are exactly where the contact goes.

  2. Depth costs volume, volume costs planning

Two millimeters of thickness across a large area is a lot of compound, and the sheet will not stretch. Sketch the layout, take the biggest rectangle first, and keep the strips that come off the sides. The mistake is starting with the small pieces because they are easy and then finding the large one no longer fits.

  3. Soft enough for a light clamp

Backplates are usually held on with small screws into standoffs, not with a spring-loaded bracket, so the clamping force available is modest. This compound stays soft at 2 mm and deforms under that kind of pressure rather than fighting it, which is what lets a thin metal plate close evenly instead of bowing between fasteners.

  4. Non-conductive across a whole PCB

A pad this large will touch traces, vias and solder joints across a wide area, so the material being electrically non-conductive and non-corrosive is not a footnote. It is the reason a filler like this can be laid straight onto the reverse of a populated board without an insulating layer between them.
