Check price and buyA phase-change pad is a solid sheet at room temperature that softens and flows once the processor warms up, settling into the surface texture the way paste does but arriving as a clean piece of material. This 40 x 30 mm HeatPhase Ultra is cut for Intel heatspreaders, is 0.2 mm thick and carries a rating of 8.5 W/mK.
The pad is placed dry on a cold heatspreader, which means no squeezing, no spreading and no judging how much is too much. On the first proper heat cycle the material passes its phase-change point, wets both surfaces and fills the microscopic roughness. From then on it behaves as an interface layer rather than as a sheet.
At 40 x 30 mm this piece matches the exposed metal of mainstream Intel packages, so alignment is a matter of laying it square rather than measuring anything. Check it against your specific processor before fitting: socket dimensions change between generations and a pad that overhangs is worse than one that is slightly small.
For a first-time build, a warranty-sensitive machine or a laptop that has to be reassembled in a hurry, the appeal is that there is nothing to get wrong. No blob too large, no smear across the socket, no cleanup. The trade is that you cannot vary the thickness or cover an odd shape.
Take it off with the machine cold, when the material is solid again and lifts as one piece rather than smearing. It is not intended to be refitted: once it has flowed and been disturbed, the surface it made is gone. Fit a new piece or switch to paste for the reassembly.
