Putty is consumed by volume rather than by area, and deep uneven gaps swallow it quickly. This 50 g jar of GN-Ultimate at 6 W/mK is the working quantity for someone doing this regularly rather than once: a repair bench, a console specialist, or anyone rebuilding cards where the factory pads were never the right shape to begin with.

  1. Volume is what runs out

    A single graphics card with a memory row and a bank of power stages can take a surprising amount of putty, because every millimeter of depth across every component adds up. The larger jar removes the calculation of whether there is enough left, which is the calculation that leads to a thin patch somewhere.

  2. One material for a whole board

    The appeal of working in putty is that a bench does not need a drawer of thicknesses. One jar covers every gap on a board from a few tenths of a millimeter to several, which simplifies both the ordering and the moment of realizing at midnight that the size you need is the size you are out of.

  3. Keeping the jar usable

    Close it firmly after use and keep it out of direct sun. The material does not cure, so the enemy is contamination rather than time: dust, swarf and stray fibers pressed into the surface of the jar end up in the next joint. Take what you need with clean fingers and do not put the excess back.

  4. Removing it later

    Putty comes off with a plastic spudger and patience, usually in one mass rather than in flakes. Finish with isopropyl on a lint-free cloth. Because it neither hardens nor bonds chemically to the board, a component that was buried in it two years ago looks the same underneath as it did the day it went in.
