A 140 mm fan moves more air at a lower speed than a 120 can, and lower speed is what quiet actually means. This one turns at 1000 rpm, delivers 64.8 CFM and is rated 21 dBA, which is more airflow than the 120 mm model at two thirds of the rotational speed. It connects with three pins.

  1. Bigger and slower is the whole trick

    Noise from a fan comes largely from blade tips cutting through air and from turbulence downstream. A larger impeller displaces the same volume with less of both, because it does not need to spin as fast to do it. Where a case accepts 140 mm mounts, using them is the easiest quiet gain available.

  2. More air than the 120, less noise

    At 64.8 CFM and 21 dBA this moves more than the 120 mm PWM model while measuring several decibels lower. Those are manufacturer figures under their own conditions, but the relationship between them is the physical reality: size buys airflow that would otherwise cost speed and speed costs noise.

  3. Three-pin simplicity

    Without a PWM line the fan runs at whatever voltage it is given, which for a fan this slow is often perfectly acceptable at full speed. It is the straightforward choice for a case header, a fan controller or a splitter, and there is one fewer thing in the firmware to configure.

  4. Check the mounting holes before ordering

    Not every case marked as supporting 140 mm fans has the spacing in every position, and some panels take 140 only at the front. Count the holes rather than trusting the specification sheet, and check clearance against a radiator or a drive cage while you are there.
