The 50 mm size is a step up in air with barely a step up in space, and it is one of the most requested replacement sizes there is: small NAS boxes, audio equipment, embedded controllers and older hardware that came with a fan nobody expected to still be running. This one delivers 12.65 CFM at 4000 rpm.

  1. Almost twice the air of a 40 mm fan

    Going from 7.65 to 12.65 CFM is a large proportional gain for ten extra millimeters across the frame, because airflow scales with the swept area rather than the width. Where an enclosure can take the larger size, it is nearly always worth the small amount of extra room it needs.

  2. A common replacement for equipment that outlived its fan

    Plenty of hardware is thrown out because it got noisy rather than because it stopped working. The fan is usually the only worn part, it is usually a standard size, and it is usually held in by four screws. A quiet replacement is the cheapest possible repair on a device that otherwise works.

  3. Reading dBA figures honestly

    A rating of 23 dBA is measured at a set distance in a quiet room with the fan unobstructed. Screwed into a metal panel with a wire grille in front of it, any fan will read higher and sound different. Use the number to compare fans against each other, not to predict what your desk will sound like.

  4. Fifteen millimeters of depth

    The frame is 15 mm deep, which is the common thickness at this size but not the only one. Compare against what came out before ordering, and check that the wires exit on a side you can route from once the fan is in place. Turning a fan a quarter turn to fix a cable route also turns the airflow, which is fine, and turning it to fix the airflow the other way is not always possible.
