Check price and buyCases have more fan mounts than boards have headers, and this is the usual answer. One 4-pin PWM input feeds four outputs, all sharing the same control signal, on a sleeved cable with adhesive tape already applied to the back so it can be stuck out of sight behind the motherboard tray.
Every fan on the hub receives the same PWM signal and therefore runs at the same duty cycle. That is exactly what you want for a group doing the same job, such as three intake fans on a front panel, and not what you want if one of them is on a radiator and needs a different curve.
A motherboard header can read one tachometer signal, so a hub reports the speed of a single fan and the others are invisible to the board. Bear that in mind if the firmware is set to alarm or shut down on a stalled fan: it will only ever notice the one it can see.
The hub accepts both, but a three-pin fan cannot interpret a PWM signal and will simply run at full speed on a shared header. Group your fans by type rather than by position if you want predictable behavior, or fit four-pin fans throughout and let the curve do the work.
The braided sleeve keeps four fan cables from becoming a nest, and the pre-applied tape lets the hub sit flat behind the tray instead of dangling in an airflow path. Small details, but the difference between a build that is tidy on day one and one that is tidy in a year is entirely made of them.
