Check price and buyThe bluntest way to quieten a fan that has no speed control at all. This 110 mm cable puts a 43 ohm resistance in line, which brings a 12 V fan down to around 7 V and slows it permanently. The manufacturer puts the noise reduction between 30 and 70 percent depending on the fan.
Plenty of hardware gives you no control over its fan: a header that only supplies full voltage, a device with no firmware to speak of, a power supply or an appliance. A resistor cable works anyway, because it does not need the source to cooperate. It simply delivers less voltage than the fan was expecting.
Less voltage means less speed, which means less air and much less noise, since noise rises far faster than airflow does. The trade is real: check temperatures after fitting one, because a fan slowed below what the equipment needs is a repair bill waiting rather than an improvement.
Some fans will run happily at 7 V but refuse to start from cold at that voltage, sitting still and buzzing instead. If that happens the fan is not faulty and the cable is not either; they are just a poor match. Fans with a lower rated speed to begin with are generally the safer candidates.
It is short, which is correct: it belongs immediately at the fan rather than adding length to a run. Fit it, tuck it, and label it if the machine is one you will open again, because a fan that mysteriously runs slow is confusing to diagnose two years later.
