Check price and buyNot every processor needs the top of the range. GC-2 is the plain working compound of the line, supplied in a 3.5 g syringe, and it exists for the machines that are simply being put back together properly: office desktops, media boxes, stock coolers on chips that were never going to be pushed. It is non-conductive, non-corrosive and does not cure.
A stock cooler on a chip running within its rated limits is not short of thermal headroom, and the difference between a mid-range compound and a premium one in that situation is small enough to disappear into fan noise. What matters is that the layer is fresh, thin and evenly spread. GC-2 does that job without asking for a premium.
A desktop processor takes something in the region of a rice grain of paste, which means a syringe this size covers a great many applications. For a household that reassembles a machine every couple of years it is effectively a lifetime supply, and since the compound does not cure in the syringe it will still be usable at the end of that.
For a heatspreader with a flat cooler base, a single central dot and firm even clamping is enough: the pressure spreads the layer better than a spatula does. Spreading by hand is worth the trouble mainly on bare dies and on cold plates that are visibly convex, where you want to see the coverage before the cooler goes down.
The compound is formulated not to bleed or run, which matters more than it sounds on a vertically mounted board. A paste that migrates leaves a thin patch where it was needed and an oily film where it was not. This one stays where it was put and does not harden into a crust that has to be scraped off.
