Icecap is the answer when a drive needs cooling and there is almost no room to give it. The aluminum heatsink measures 72 x 23 x 10 mm, comes with two thermal pads for the top and underside of the drive, and fastens securely enough to keep the pads under pressure without relying on tape.

  1. Ten millimeters of total height

Height is the constraint that decides most M.2 cooling questions, because the slot usually sits beneath a graphics card or inside a compact case. At 10 mm overall this heatsink clears situations where a taller finned block simply will not go in, which makes it the practical choice more often than the ambitious one.

  2. Pads on both faces of the drive

Two pads are supplied because a modern drive puts chips on both sides of the board, and the underside one is frequently the hotter of the two. Cooling only the top face leaves half the heat to escape through the motherboard, which is a much slower route than aluminum.

  3. What lower temperatures actually buy

A cooler drive holds its rated speed through long sequential work instead of backing off partway, and it spends less of its life at the top of its temperature range, which is one of the things that shortens flash endurance. Neither effect is dramatic on a lightly used machine; both are obvious on one that writes all day.

  4. Fitting it without damaging the drive

Peel the liners rather than leaving them in place, seat the drive flat before tightening anything, and bring the fixing up firmly but without forcing it. An M.2 board is thin and will bow if one end is clamped before the other, and a bowed drive makes worse contact than a bare one.
