A 140 mm frame moves the air a 120 mm one does at a lower speed, and speed is where most fan noise comes from. This is the black Silent 14, a 140 x 140 x 25 mm fan rated at 1500 rpm on a fluid dynamic bearing, with a three-pin connector and anti-vibration mounts supplied in place of screws.

  1. The argument for the larger frame

Air volume rises with the swept area of the blades, so a wider fan reaches a given airflow at fewer revolutions. Fewer revolutions mean less blade-tip turbulence and less bearing noise, which is why a case with 140 mm mounting holes is worth using at that size rather than adapting it down to 120.

  2. Fifty thousand hours on a fluid bearing

The bearing is rated above 50,000 hours mean time to failure at 40 C, which is years of continuous running rather than months. A fluid dynamic bearing also tends to stay quiet as it ages instead of developing the dry rattle that eventually gives away a sleeve bearing in a machine left on overnight.

  3. Rubber mounts rather than four screws

The fan ships with temperature-resistant rubber pins that take the place of the usual metal screws. They hold the frame off the panel so that motor vibration is absorbed instead of conducted into the chassis, which on a thin steel side panel is often the difference between a fan you hear and one you do not.

  4. Three pins and how the board drives it

The connector is three-pin, so speed is set by the voltage the motherboard supplies rather than by a duty-cycle signal. Most boards offer a voltage curve for exactly this. If the header is left in a mode that expects four-pin fans, this one will simply run at full speed all the time.
